The Orange 2015/2016 harvest the main citrus park in Brazil that includes 323 municipalities of São Paulo and Minas Gerais 26 was 300.65 million of 40.8 kg boxes, according Fundecitrus – Defense Fund for Citrus Plant, entity maintained by citrus growers and juice industries.
The number represents an increase of 7.76 % compared to the initial estimate made by Fundecitrus, in May 2015, at the beginning of the harvest.
Among the main varieties of orange citrus produced in the park, the largest increase was in the late varieties. The crop of Valencia and wilt leaf was 6.12 % higher than originally planned. Already early Hamlin, Westin and Ruby had an increase of 0.72 %. This is due to the large volume of rainfall between December and January, which had influence on fruit size. The data collected showed that the fruits are heavier and, consequently, a box is made with 19 fruit less than initially projected (226 fruit / box in April / 16 to 245 fruit / box in May / 15)
According to the survey by Fundecitrus, this harvest were collected 105.92 million boxes of Valencia and Valencia varieties Leaf Wilt, 82,310,000 of Pera Rio boxes; 58,860,000 boxes of Hamlin varieties, Westin and Ruby; 38.90 million Christmas boxes and 14.66 million boxes of Valencia varieties American, Valencia Argentina, Seleta and Pineapple.
The fruit drop rate in the 2015/2016 harvest was 17.49 % and was within the historical average of the last ten years.
The work estimate and crop monitoring is done by Fundecitrus, in partnership with Markestrat, the Faculty of Economics and USP's Board of Ribeirão Preto (FEA-RP / USP) and the Department of Statistics at the Faculty of Agricultural and Veterinary Sciences of Unesp Jaboticabal (FCAV / Unesp). The estimate of the 2016/2017 orange crop will be released on May 10.
